Pride & Prejudice

There are numerous film adaptations of Pride and Prejudice, but probably one of the most notable version and probably the most famous is the film released in 2005 starring Keira Knightley (who was an Oscar-nominated performance) and Matthew Macfadyen.

Sparks fly when spirited Elizabeth Bennett meets single, rich, and proud Mr. Darcy. But Mr. Darcy reluctantly finds himself falling in love with a woman beneath his class. Can each overcome their own pride and prejudice?

  • Keira Knightley plays Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Bennet who is the second daughter of five. Her four sisters are Jane (the eldest), Mary, Kitty and Lydia. They live near Netherfield where they meet Mr. Charles Bingley (and his sister Miss Bingley) and Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.

The Bennets sisters never had a governess and so they are all out in society. Elizabeth plays poorly the pianoforte, but is a avid reader. She is, for that time, a woman ahead of her age. She thinks and questions the motives, being even considered impolite and bold.

She does not marry without love, although twice proposed to. First by Mr. Collins, her cousin, who afterwards marries her best friend Charlotte Lucas. Second by Mr. Darcy, to whom at first she neglects, because she believes him guilty of several charges. After hearing his motives, she falls in love with him and accepts him.

From the title, she represents pride. Too proud to marry without love, too proud to at first see the other side of the story and admit she is wrong. In the end, both her and Darcy grow out of their pride and prejudice, finally getting married.
About Keira Knightley: The daughter of actor Will Knightley and playwright Sharman Macdonald. After she requested an agent at the age of three, her parents allowed her to work on productions in her summer holidays. Her first role was at the age of 9, in Moira Armstrong's Lesbian Lips (1995) (TV). However, Knightley's first high profile role came in 1999, as Sabe, Decoy Queen to Natalie Portman's Queen Amidala in Star Wars: Episodio I  (1999). Since then she has completed an impressive array of films including The Hole (2001), but is probably best known for her role of tomboy footballer Jules Paxton in Gurinder Chadha's Bend it like Beckham (2002) but especially for her role in Pirates of the Caribbean.
  • Matthew Macfadyen plays Mr Darcy who is an intelligent, wealthy, handsome and reserved 28-year-old man who often appears haughty or proud to strangers.

He is the nephew of Lady Catherine de Bourgh and brother of Georgiana Darcy. With a huge property in Pemberley and with an income of ten thousand pounds a year, he is forever in love with Elizabeth Bennet, the second of the five Bennet sisters.

Darcy grew up side by side with Mr. Wickham. Darcy's father left on his will a parish for Wickham to join the church. Wickham on the other hand demanded the correspondent money and left. He returned years later in an attempt to elope with Georgiana, Darcy's sister, to get her money. She was only fifteen.

Finally to win Elizabeth's heart he defies his aunt and puts all his prejudice aside. In the beginning of the novel he is described as an arrogant man. It is also shown that he has an enormous influence on his friends, such as Mr. Charles Bingley. Darcy at first believing that Jane Bennet (Elizabeth's sister) didn't care for his friend, discourages him from proposing. Afterwards, hearing and witnessing otherwise, he encourages Bingley to marry her, which he does.

Darcy helps the Bennets when their daughter Lydia elopes with Wickham, only because of his affection towards Lizzie Bennet. He is also loving to his sister, encouraging her piano playing.

Darcy proposes to Elizabeth (Bennet) twice, never losing his hope and at a private ball even dances with her, although he is a man who does not seem to like dancing.

He writes beautiful letters to his sister and to explain his motives for his actions to Elizabeth. With this, he finally wins Elizabeth's heart, marrying her regardless to her lack of fortune or of contacts.
